The number one pet peeve of black women is dry hair.

Afro ethnic hair can be “characteristically fragile” and is prone to dryness and frizziness. Unfortunately, these attributes can lead to damaged hair.

Luckily, there are a lot of ways on how to protect vulnerable locks from stretching and snapping and how to replenish dry, frizzy hair with a hair moisturizer.

HEALTHY HAIR MOISTURIZER FOR BLACK WOMEN

In order to achieve salon gorgeous hair, healthy products and healthy styling is a must. Products with harsh chemicals can leave your hair looking flat and dull because they can remove your hair’s natural oils.

Always opt for deep moisturizing shampoos, oils and conditioners to keep your hair healthy and nourished. It is also recommended to adopt a daily, weekly and semi-regular treatment method for your hair.

Use protein treatments as well on a monthly basis.

Black hair tends to be dry because of its structure. Our tight curl pattern prevents oils from passing through the hair shaft. Thus, a hair moisturizer everyday is recommended.

When you apply heat on your hair for styling, it is important to use a light, oil-based treatment to retain the moisture in your hair and prevent damage from styling. But as much as possible, cut back on heat styling.

Blow dryers and flat irons can contribute to the drying of your hair.

AVOID PETROLEUM-BASED PRODUCTS LIKE THE PLAGUE

What may be great on rough patches on the skin may not be so great when applied on our hair. Mineral oil is a derivative of crude oil or petroleum and it is used industrially as lubricating oil. When applied on the skin, it coats it like plastic wrap. And just like plastic, it disrupts the skin’s natural barrier, which inhibits its ability to breathe.

Toxins and wastes will not be able to go out resulting in skin diseases like acne. The same results will be observed if petroleum is applied on your hair. It will clog pores and it will slow down your hair’s cell development, which can result in dry and damaged hair. Hair moisturizer and petroleum products don’t mix!

HAIR MOISTURIZER FOR BLACK HAIR – NATURAL IS THE WAY TO GO

  1. ORGANIC UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER MOISTURIZER

This heavenly hair moisturizer is rich in vitamins A and E. Its main components include linoleic acid, stearic acid & oleic acid, and the skin easily absorbs these three. Always opt for unrefined shea butter as it is in its purest form.

One thing to keep in mind though is Shea Butter cannot moisturize your hair on its own.

Only water and some oils can do that. But what it does is it locks in the moisture that came from the water—it seals it inside.

Shea Butter absorbs perfectly into the scalp and it does not clog pores, which makes it great to use as treatment for dry scalp. When used in right amounts, it gives all these benefits without leaving you with greasy and oily hair. What more could you ask for?

  1. COCONUT OIL

When it comes to a hair moisturizer, one can never go wrong with coconut oil. It is rich in antioxidants and has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Plus, it is the only oil that reduces protein loss and it is protein loss in hair that causes breakage and dryness.

Coconut oil is very beneficial for your hair.

It aids in hair growth and it makes your hair shinier. Its molecules are small making it easy to penetrate the hair. This is advantageous because if the oil can easily pass through the hair shaft, it can combine with your hair’s natural oils resulting in shinier, stronger and damage-free hair.

Coconut oil is beneficial for hair

Furthermore, coconut oil can help stimulate proper circulation in the scalp keeping it hydrated and well moisturized. Regularly massaging your head with coconut oil can also make your scalp dandruff and lice-free, even if your scalp is chronically dry.

The best way to use coconut oil is to apply a water-based product first and then seal with the coconut oil. This helps retain the moisture from the water-based product. The key to using this all-natural oil is to find the right amount for your hair.

Remember, a little goes a long way.

  1. ARGAN OIL

Often called the Miracle Oil or Liquid Gold, this golden-colored oil, which is produced from the kernels of the Argania spinosa L. tree native to Morocco, has abundant beneficial nutrients, which includes Vitamin E and fatty acids. For celebrities, this oil is an absolute must as a hair moisturizer.

Argan oil is the ideal hair conditioner.

Aside from being non-irritating, it actually reverses the damage done to your hair by harmful chemicals from different hair products. Thus, it helps you achieve healthier hair. It can also help cure dry and frizzy hair as well as tame your split ends.

One of the ways to use Argan oil is by using it as a shampoo. It is an ideal ingredient to look for in shampoos as it can restore dry, brittle hair. When you use Argan Oil as an ingredient in shampoos, you can no longer worry about the correct amount to use for your hair since you can just use it as you would when using normal shampoos while ensuring strong, nourished hair.

Argan Oil can also be used as a leave-in conditioner and hair moisturizer.

In doing so, you will be able to use its beneficial effects to a maximum. When used in right amounts, your hair will be able to quickly absorb it without your hair feeling greasy and oily. All you need is a few drops, rub it into your palms and massage it into your scalp.

Argan Oil

An overnight treatment as a hair mask is also a great way to maximize the effects of this oil on the hair. Using a larger quantity means many nutrients can be absorbed. When applying Argan Oil as a hair mask, use liberal amounts.

Massage it into your scalp; hair and roots then wrap your hair up with a towel to prevent the oil from staining your pillows. Leave it overnight and then wash your hair the next morning. Voila! You now have sensational, soft hair.

PRE-POO: A PRE-SHAMPOO TREATMENT – HAIR MOISTURIZER HOME REMEDY

Probably the best solution to treat breakage, dryness, brittle ends, coarseness, and uncontrollable frizzy hair is pre-shampooing. This process includes applying products into your hair before your normal hair cleansing routine.

During pre-poo treatments, the hair softens making it easy to detangle avoiding breakage. Detangled hair makes washing and conditioning easier.

There are a lot of factors that can strip off all the moisture from our hair. When you pre-poo your hair using oils or products that penetrates the hair, it can help stop moisture loss during hair cleansing.

Pre-poo treatments can contribute to greater hair elasticity by fortifying the hair with vitamins and minerals. Also, by incorporating a pre-shampoo treatment, it can help retain hair moisture, which makes your hair shinier, softer and stronger for longer periods of time.

Leave oil pre-poo treatments on your hair for about 30 to 45 minutes, but it works best when left on overnight.

Below are some pre-poo products you can use at home:

  1. KRAFT Miracle Whip

BASIC HAIR CARE ROUTINE – HAIR MOISTURIZER FOR DRY HAIR

HAIR MOISTURIZER FOR DRY HAIR

Remember that when it comes to our hair, there is no one-size-fits-all method. However, there is a basic hair care routine that you can follow to guide you.

  1. WASHING/CLEANSING
  • Pre-shampoo your hair using natural oils or other pre-poo products to keep your hair from drying out.
  • Shampoo your hair afterwards. Always opt for sulfate-free products and shampoos that are formulated specifically for your hair type.
  • Rinse your hair afterwards with water or you can co-wash.
  • Conditioner-washing or co-wash is great for keeping your hair well-moisturized and hydrated without stripping its natural oils. This cleansing method can help define your curls as well as soften your hair, making it easier to comb through your hair without worrying about breakage.
  • You can use virgin coconut oil for co-washing instead of traditional chemical conditioners.
  • Dry your hair using a non-heat method after co-washing because heat appliances can cause  damage to healthy hair.
  1. MOISTURIZE
  • Since the oils from your scalp are not administered evenly throughout the hair because of the twists and curls, conditioning is a must.
  • To moisturize, you can use conditioners with a moisturizing formula or those that are specifically designed for curly, straight or kinky hair after shampooing.
  • While waiting for your hair to dry, apply leave-in conditioners or hair oils. This method can help maintain moisture.
  • A least once a month, deep condition your hair. Use products specifically designed for deep conditioning. If you are using hair oils, leave it on overnight or you can sit under a dryer with a plastic cap.
  1. DETANGLE
  • While your hair is soaked with conditioner, detangle. Most women have success using this method since conditioners can make your hair soft and smooth, which makes it easier to detangle.
  • While your hair is still damp, apply oil or moisturizer and then detangle using a wide-tooth comb or combs that are designed specifically for detangling. Avoid finer combs for it can cause snagging and breakage.
  • Divide your hair and detangle in small sections. Be extremely gentle.
  • Detangling your hair when it is dry is not recommended.
  1. PROTECT YOUR HAIR WHILE SLEEPING

Another source of damage to hair occurs when you are sleeping. To minimize the tangles and the damage, follow these tips:

  • Sleep with a hair bonnet or use a satin pillowcase.
  • Pile or pull your hair gently on top of your head before you sleep.

Incorporating your own hair care regimens in this basic hair care routine will help you achieve those beautiful, healthy and luxurious locks you have always wanted.
